Nothing like pulling teeth
At Dubuque Periodontics, we know that tooth extractions have earned a bad rap over the years – from popular culture to stories of generations past. Thankfully, today, with advances in modern techniques and technology, having teeth extracted is a fairly simple, routine procedure that’s nothing to fear.
Do I need a tooth extraction?
There are several reasons our patients sometimes require extractions. While our primary goal is keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy enough to preserve your natural teeth for as long as possible, sometimes an extraction is our last resort. You may require an extraction if you suffer from:
- Loose teeth caused by gum disease
- Extensive decay
- Infection of the tooth root
- Impacted teeth
- Bite problems*
- Excessive crowding
*If you have issues with your bite, or the way that your teeth fit and work together, but you don’t require a full extraction, we can also perform occlusal adjustments. Occlusal adjustment is the reshaping of the surfaces of the teeth to develop and improve your bite.
How do extractions work?
If you suffer from any of the above oral health problems, and have been recommended by Dr. Fili or your general dentist to have a tooth extraction, you should rest assured your smile is in good hands with our team at Dubuque Periodontics. Dr. Fili will use a local anesthetic to make sure you don’t feel anything, and offers sedation options if you have anxiety about the procedure. He will go in and gently remove the tooth and any underlying infected tissue, and close the wound with sutures to promote healthy healing.
Once you’ve had an extraction, you may wonder what we can do to close the gap in your smile. We are happy to offer the most recommended tooth replacement solution on the market – among doctors and patients alike – with dental implants. Implants can help you preserve your oral and bone health, restore facial aesthetics, and serve as anchors for restorations like crowns and dentures.
